I'm a writer-reporter, editor, social media strategist, publicist, and all-around wordsmith and communications practitioner with more than 20 years of experience. Over the course of my varied career, I've written and edited articles and press, corporate, and web content on a range of subject matter, and created and managed multifaceted media campaigns for a diverse spectrum of clients and audiences, most notably for nonprofits and film and book release campaigns, including cookbook author Rachael Ray.
As a published writer, I've contributed articles on everything from politics, the "green scene", architecture, and technology, to such lighter lifestyle topics as style, home, food + drink, and real estate. I've written for the C-Ville Weekly, Richmond.com,The Daily Progress, Richmond Magazine, Northern Virginia Magazine, VirginiaLiving.com, INFORM Magazine (published by the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects), Architect Magazine (published by the American Institute of Architects), Virginia Gardener Magazine and MediaBistro.com, among other publications. My photography was featured in two books from The History Press by Lee Graves, "Richmond Beer: A History of Brewing in the River City" and "Charlottesville Beer: Brewing in Jefferson's Shadow."
My most notable accomplishment in the publicity arena was garnering then unknown cookbook author Rachael Ray national media attention. As a book publicist at National Book Network just outside Washington, D.C. in 2001, I worked with numerous publishers to bring awareness to their titles, including Lake Isle Press, Ray's publisher. I was responsible for securing Ray's first national television appearance when I got her booked on "The NBC Today Show." I also spread the word about Ray to The Food Network. Immediately after her appearance on "The Today Show," Comfort Foods, the title I was publicizing for Ray and Lake Isle Press, shot to the top five in Amazon.com sales and The Food Network called me to schedule a meeting with Ray to discuss her own show.
I have also worked with Oettinger and Associates, a Washington, D.C. area PR firm, on four independent film campaigns, including for "The War Tapes," "Sweet Land," "Flannel Pajamas," and "David & Layla." I started my career as an on-air radio reporter at the award-winning news-talk radio station WINA in Charlottesville, Va., and have worked as a full-timer at such organizations as VMDO Architects, Island Press, the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation, and Keppler Speakers. As a freelancer, I've worked with PBS Education, Yoga Alliance, Southern Women's Show, the Underground Kitchen, among other clients and cookbook authors (including Cindy's Table and Elana's Pantry).
I'm a graduate of Virginia Tech with a BS in Marketing and Georgia State University with a MA in Communications. If you'd like to know more, I'll probably tell you the rest of the minutiae of my life. Click here to contact me or download my resume.
